The Karnatka State Open Univesity was established on 1st June 1996 vide Karnatka Govt. Notification No. UOV 95 dated 12th February 1996, KSOU Act 1992, keeping in view the educational needs of our country in general abd Karnatka State, in particular. The Karnataka State Open University is the 8th Open University to be established in India and has come up as a result of the country's long and rich experience in the field of distance education. The university actually evolved from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the University of Mysore.

It is also a member of the Association of Indian University (AIU) as well as Commenwealth University Association. it is also a recognised member University of Distance Education Councile (DEC) , Ministry of HRD, Government of India
